Dr. Eric Rignot is the Chancellor Professor of Earth System Science at the University of California at Irvine's School of Physical Science and the principal scientist for the Radar Science and Engineering Section at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. He has specialized in the mass balance of the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets, the interactions between ice shelves and ocean systems, ice sheet modeling, and climate change. His research group focuses on understanding the interactions between ice sheets, glaciers and climate, and the future of sea level change from melting ice sheets. He was a lead author of the IPCC FifthAssessment report in 2014 on climate change and has published numerous papers in peer-reviewed science publications. Eric holds a doctorate in engineering from the University of South California and masters degrees in astrophysics and aerospace engineering from the University of Paris and USC respectively.

 

James and Joanne Moriarty were a successful business couple living in Libya from 2007 until the overthrow and death of General Muammar Ghadafi in 2011. While in Libya, their business provided enzymes to rejuvenate oil wells and clean up sludge pits earning $5 billion. It was while building a manufacturing facility in Libya that the revolution began and NATO invaded. During the rioting and collapse of the Ghadafi government and the new rule of radical Islamic factions, the Moriarty’s and other foreigners attempting to leave on a rescue ship were captured and held by al-Qaeda-related militias, then eventually released.
